We'll Meet Again in the Next Life

On New Year's Eve, my brother called during a livestream.

I spoke first:

“May you be safe and happy, and live to a hundred.”

My brother sneered:

“But I don't want you to be happy or live a long life at all.

“I hope you suffer for the rest of your life.”

I cut ties with him during the poorest year of his life.

Now that he's made a name for himself, his first act is to take revenge on me.

My voice was as calm as ever:

“May you be safe and happy, and live to a hundred.”

My brother snapped impatiently:

“Enough. I could never wish you well.

“If I have to, then I hope you suffer forever.”

The host hesitated, but still reminded him:

“Mr. Zhou, that's only a recording of Ms. Zhou's call.

“When she passed away, she really was suffering, just as you said.”
