Chen Jianghe is an orphan, taken in and raised by Chen Jinshui. Gifted with an exceptional head for business from childhood, he learns from watching the adults trade candy for odds and ends, mastering the art of quickly judging the value of goods and making deals. The 1980s are a time of opportunity, and Yiwu's small commodities market is booming. Chen Jianghe travels across most of China, developing all the qualities of a successful businessman. By chance, he meets Luo Yu, who shares his hardships, and Yang Xue, a wealthy young woman who has returned from studying abroad. He becomes caught up in a love-and-hate entanglement with the two women that will last for more than half a century. In the 1990s, Yiwu's market flourishes, and Chen Jianghe and his wife, Luo Yuzhu, become leaders in the business world. But Yang Xue, whose love has turned to hatred, becomes Chen Jianghe's greatest business rival.
