The Presidents: Another Side of the Republic's Leaders

This accessible book offers profiles of the early presidents of the Republic of China. The Presidents includes six figures: the five presidents of the Beiyang Government, Yuan Shikai, Li Yuanhong, Feng Guozhang, Xu Shichang, and Cao Kun, as well as Sun Yat-sen, who founded the republic and served as its provisional president. Young writer Zhang Cheng uses delicate prose to offer honest, plainspoken portraits of these six influential presidents of the Republican era. Challenging the one-sided views found in traditional accounts, he draws on many historical sources that are little known or often overlooked, offering a distinctive perspective on their stories. The book is both objectively analytical and engaging, leaving readers intrigued and prompting deeper reflection.
