Major Anti-Corruption Cases of the Qing Dynasty

The Major Anti-Corruption Cases of the Qing Dynasty is an outstanding work that combines scholarship with entertainment. In vivid prose, the author recounts one major corruption case after another from the Qing dynasty. The Kong family’s mutual accusations sparked an examination of morality and the status of sages’ descendants; the Chen Huizu case gave rise to a debate over corrupt officials and thieves in government; abuses at postal stations led to investigations into corruption; the fraudulent examination in Jinxiang reflected the upheaval caused by social mobility amid changing class structures; the loss of the Ministry of War’s seal, fake donations for official positions, and the theft of the national treasury exposed corruption among low-ranking officials; the Huang Yulin case offered a glimpse into the power struggle between Qing salt merchants and the government; in the Eastern Imperial Tombs scandal, brazen officials even dared to reach their corrupt hands into the emperor’s tomb; and the Dongxiang massacre, a wrongful case whose creation and resolution were full of twists and turns. The book also reveals the many ills corruption brought upon society, including embezzlement, bribery, abuse of the law for personal gain, the sale of official posts and titles, backroom dealings, factionalism, dereliction of duty, and perfunctory work. It offers later generations a chance to learn from history. Written in clear, accessible prose, this book is both popular reading for everyone and an entertaining work with educational value. Its publication will bring significant social value and impact, and is therefore recommended for publication.
