During the Zhenguan era of the Tang Dynasty, the Turks invade the border, and the Tang king appoints Xue Li commander of the western campaign. Xue Li is halted at Hanjang Pass. Just then, his long-lost son Xue Dingshan returns and takes the field against the enemy, taking the female general Fan Lihua as his wife. Fan Lihua's father had originally promised her to the foreign general Yang Fan. Xue Dingshan grows suspicious time and again and drives Fan Lihua away. Putting the greater good first and setting aside personal grievances, Fan Lihua repeatedly saves her husband from danger, helping the Tang army break through Qinglong, Heifeng, Chihu, and Suoyang Passes. At last, the old commander Xue Li dies in battle. Xue Dingshan asks Fan Lihua to return three times, kills Yang Fan, and captures Baihu Pass. The couple reconcile and return to court victorious.
