Qin Ying's Western Campaign

During the Tang dynasty, Qin Huaiyu, son of Qin Qiong, accompanies His Highness on a western campaign and is surrounded by the enemy general Su Hai, who leads troops against him. Su Hai is actually Su Baotong, grandson of Su Dingfang. Qin Ying, Qin Huaiyu's son, kills Grand Preceptor Zhan, the emperor's father-in-law, near the Jinshui Bridge after the man abuses his power, then reprimands a favored consort. Qin Ying's mother, Princess Yinping, binds her son and takes him to court to plead guilty on his behalf. The emperor orders Qin Ying executed, but Duke of Lu Cheng Yaojin, returning from the battlefield to seek reinforcements, firmly demands that the Tang emperor pardon him. Empress Changsun intercedes, the princess apologizes, and Qin Ying sets out to rescue his father, still bearing the blame for his crime.

The Tang emperor prepares to select generals for the western campaign, and the sons of the founding heroes compete for a place. Qin Ying, son of the consort Qin Huaiyu, who is in turn the son of Qin Shubao, lifts two stone lions and defeats the martial arts champion Zhan Hu. He wins the contest and takes command of the western campaign. On the way, Qin Ying reaches Duosong Pass, where Luo Zhang, grandson of Luo Cheng, kills the defending generals Hong Jiang and Hong Hai. Hong Yue'e seeks revenge for her brothers and fights Luo Zhang, but falls in love with him and deliberately spares his life. Wounded, Luo Zhang recovers at the home of Li Yueying, disciple of the Old Mother of Mount Li, and marries her. Hong Yue'e goes looking for Luo Zhang and marries him as well. Luo Zhang and Qin Ying take Duosong Pass by storm. But only Hong Yue'e can break the Three Yin Formation, so Luo Zhang returns home to ask his two wives to join the campaign. Fan Lihua, wife of Xue Dingshan and daughter-in-law of Xue Rengui, leads reinforcements to aid Qin Huaiyu. Luo Zhang persuades his two worthy wives to break the formation, crushing the Western Liang army and capturing Su Hai.
