The Life of Zeng Guofan

With vivid, meticulous prose, this work offers a sweeping portrait of Zeng Guofan's eventful life. He meets Hu Linyi, and the two become close, sharing a commitment to serve their country. From pursuing an education and earning distinction in the imperial examinations to upholding his principles and bringing about change in his early official career, and then founding the Xiang Army to fight the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, Zeng Guofan presses forward without hesitation. Amid internal turmoil and foreign threats, he bears the court's suspicions and the pressure of public opinion, holding fast to his original purpose through difficult choices. When rebuilding the Xiang Army, he reforms military discipline, selects talented people, and improves tactics. At home, he is a wise teacher to his children and a steadfast support to his wife, shouldering his family's responsibilities. Amid factional struggles and power plays in officialdom, his thinking gradually changes. He embraces new learning and leads the Self-Strengthening Movement. In diplomatic crises, he struggles to navigate the situation and seek support. In his later years, he reflects on his life, takes stock of his experiences, and passes on his ideas. Even while beset by illness, he never stops striving. He cares about people's livelihoods, advances the rule of law, and promotes commerce, contributing to social reform. His educational ideas have had a lasting influence: he values good character, tailors instruction to each student's abilities, and encourages practical learning. Zeng Guofan's life was a mixture of achievements and failures, with praise and criticism alike. Yet his wisdom shines like a brilliant star, illuminating the skies of history and pointing the way forward for us.
