Wang Yangming's Philosophy of the Mind

This book begins with Wang Yangming’s birth into an official family. It describes his upbringing amid the family’s glory and shadows, the heavy burden of expectations, and his debates over the true meaning of Confucianism, which sow the seeds of his later philosophy of the mind. Though steeped in Confucian teachings, he proves rebellious, challenging renowned scholars in the capital. Caught between tradition and reform, he must make difficult choices. His time in the capital gives him his first taste of political intrigue. He witnesses the scheming of the eunuch Liu Jin and speaks out frankly, only to be demoted. During the harsh years at Longchang, he reflects deeply and comes to the realization of the unity of knowledge and action, laying the foundations of his philosophy of the mind. The philosophy continues to develop, and Wang Yangming defends it in academic debates, bringing it together with social reform. After returning to official life, he puts his ideas to the test in political practice and displays exceptional ability. When putting down rebellions, his philosophy plays a major role in military command. Its spread sparks a wave of scholarly interest. Faced with disputes between schools of thought, Wang Yangming stands firm in the contest of ideas. He encounters challenges in carrying out social reforms, but presses on with resolve. The philosophy of the mind continues to develop and mature in military command, the resolution of inner conflicts, and theoretical innovation, eventually making an impact across East Asia and beyond. Even today, it remains valuable, finding applications in personal development and business management. It continues to spread through innovative storytelling and other means, offering inspiration for the future.
