History: When the Germanic peoples crossed the Danube, a patchwork of states arose on Roman soil. Feudal fragmentation and the church's monopoly on power plunged the land into the flames of war during the dark ages before dawn. The conquests of the "Scourge of God" had only just begun, and Germanic peoples had gathered along the Rhine. Bringing conquest and slaughter, they established their own kingdoms amid the fading light of the Western Roman Empire, ushering in Europe's thousand-year Middle Ages. In this same period, as classical culture declined, people came to venerate chivalric literature, and the knight became a byword for a hero. Yet in these dark years of civilization, knights were little more than instruments of feudal conflict and the struggle for ecclesiastical power. Even so, their legacy remains a favorite subject of discussion to this day, an immortal legend.
I especially like the stories about knights in the book. Their courage and loyalty are admirable. However, I also hate those authoritarian churches, which have brought a lot of suffering to people. Overall, this is a book worth reading and will give you a deeper understanding of medieval history.
