Synopsis

An introduction to Wolong Sheng’s classic wuxia novel, *The Swallows Return in Wind and Rain*: *The Swallows Return in Wind and Rain* is the sequel to *Flying Swallows Startle the Dragon*. Li Canglan, leader of the Heavenly Dragon Gang, is bent on dominating the martial world and has incurred the enmity of the nine major sects. In the end, however, he is driven back by a new generation of martial artists, including Yang Menghuan, Zhu Ruolan, and Zhao Xiaodie. Tao Yu, who stole the martial world’s rare book, *The Secret Manual of Returning to the Origin*, is stabbed in the kneecap by Zhu Ruolan and falls off a cliff. Yang Menghuan retires from the martial world with his beloved wives, Li Yaohong and Shen Xialin, to Water Moon Manor, and peace returns. Five years later, Tao Yu reappears. He had not died, and has mastered the martial arts recorded in *The Secret Manual of Returning to the Origin*. Now he has returned, hoping to become the supreme ruler of the martial world. Turmoil once again sweeps the land. He joins forces with a national preceptor from Tianzhu to wreak havoc and clashes again with Yang Menghuan, Zhu Ruolan, and Zhao Xiaodie. This book and its predecessor, *Flying Swallows Startle the Dragon*, form one continuous story. Romance between men and women in the martial world abounds, and the plot is even more winding and mysterious than in the previous volume. The characters are vividly portrayed, making the book a delight to read. It can be considered one of Wolong Sheng’s representative works.
