The owner of Wuthering Heights, squire Mr. Earnshaw, brought back an unidentified child named Heathcliff. Mr. Shaw's favor for Heathcliff aroused the strong jealousy of his son Hindley. After the death of his master, Hindley demoted Heathcliff to a slave in revenge and persecuted him in every possible way. However, Catherine was close to him and became childhood sweethearts.
