Drinking to Excess

A modern girl transmigrates into the body of Lu Shu, the legitimate daughter of the Lu clan of Fanyang. Before she can even celebrate, she realizes she has arrived in the reign of Emperor Xuanzong, when the An Lushan Rebellion is destined to break out. Fanyang is the rebellion’s birthplace, and for the sake of both her country and her family, she must stop it. Lu Shu knows the root of the problem is land consolidation and the separatist rule of military governors. But simply killing An Lushan would only inflame the conflict. She tries to persuade Emperor Xuanzong to curb the increasingly serious land consolidation through her father, who serves in the Ministry of War, Zhong Wang, the emperor’s own son, and Zhang Jiuling, the current chancellor. Unfortunately, the emperor has become absorbed in pleasure in his old age and refuses to reform the abuses of government. In despair, Lu Shu considers forcing him to abdicate, but has no concrete plan. For now, she can only travel north to Beiting with her childhood friend Li Mi, hoping to persuade Guo Ziyi, the general who will eventually put down the An Lushan Rebellion, to rescue Tong Pass first. Along the way, they meet Zheng Wei, an ambitious son of an aristocratic family, and travel together to the Turks, who will later join the rebels. Lu Shu succeeds in getting the Turkic khagan to promise that the Turks and the Tang will remain on friendly terms. She then persuades Guo Ziyi to head straight for Tong Pass to save the emperor. Meanwhile, new trouble arises in the Lu family of Fanyang: Lu Shu’s father is targeted and framed by Li Linfu. When Lu Shu rushes home, she catches the plot to frame him and nearly falls into danger herself. Li Mi, too, is repeatedly targeted and framed because he is assisting the crown prince. Lu Shu decides to put aside her misgivings and persuade Zheng Wei to support the crown prince. But before the crown prince can build up enough power to launch a coup, the An Lushan Rebellion breaks out.
