Siheyuan: Starting with Stewed Dog Meat, I Meet the Charming Yu Li

Life in the courtyard was as still as a stagnant pool. But Su Qing knew that one pot of stewed dog meat would send its aroma drifting through the entire place and stir everyone’s hearts.

Next door, the pretty young wife Yu Li endured a stingy husband and a dreary life. Whenever she smelled the meat, she would freeze by the stove. Su Qing wasn’t in a hurry. He could see what lay beneath those eyes: a longing for a different life. On a cold winter night, a pot of steaming meat and a few kind words were enough to crack the courtyard walls, loosening the hold of every rule.

The widows in the courtyard each had their own plans, while the older men put on airs and pointed fingers. But Su Qing’s spatula never cared what anyone thought. He knew exactly whose bowl deserved more meat and whose mouth ought to be shut. However vast the courtyard might be, it could never rival the flavor of a pot simmering over an iron stove. In the end, all that scheming and false affection paled beside the genuine warmth of the fire.

Yu Li always appeared at Su Qing’s courtyard gate around dusk, making excuses to borrow coal or return a bowl. She knew that once the meat began to stew, the courtyard’s old rules would no longer get to decide everything.
