Pokemon: Greninja Wins the Kalos Championship

Ash stood in the Kalos League finals, facing Alain’s Mega Charizard. Three years, and he hadn’t won a single time. The stadium fell silent as Pikachu went down, then a storm erupted as Greninja took the field. Ash took off his hat, steadying his racing heart. “Bond Phenomenon, Greninja.”

A pillar of water shot skyward, and a golden Water Shuriken formed behind Greninja. Alain’s Blast Burn came crashing in. Ash didn’t dodge. The Water Shuriken cleaved through the pillar of fire and struck Charizard square in the chest. When the smoke cleared, Charizard had reverted from its Mega Evolution and was on its knees, while Greninja still stood.

“The Kalos League Champion: Ash!”

Clemont smashed the railing, Serena covered her mouth as tears fell, and Sawyer shouted himself hoarse. On the podium, Diantha handed Ash the trophy. Alain held out his hand. “Next time, I won’t lose.” Ash shook it. “Next time, I don’t plan to lose either.”

Pikachu leapt onto his shoulder, and Greninja stood behind him. The setting sun stretched five shadows long: the champion’s, his partners’, and the shadow of the boy who, three years ago in Lumiose City, had cried, “I’m going to win!”
