The Age of Disorder

In a modern urban setting, a sudden global "Awakening Wave" sweeps the world. Some humans awaken as "Awakened Ones," gaining the abilities of historical or mythological figures, while others mutate into "Calamities" that act on instinct. The world descends into chaos, but the truth hidden behind it is that this is a "narrative-layer war" waged by higher-dimensional beings. Earth is the battlefield, and all the Awakened Ones and Calamities are "narrative elements" thrown into the fray to seize control of Earth's "main storyline."
