The Han Empire: Four Centuries of Rise and Fall

After the chaos at the end of the Qin dynasty, Liu Bang founded the Western Han. In its early years, the dynasty pursued policies that allowed the people to recover and rebuild. The prosperity of the Wen and Jing reigns strengthened the state, and under Emperor Wu, the Han reached its peak. The Emperor issued the Order of Favorable Succession to strengthen central authority, established Confucianism as the orthodox state ideology, sent Wei Qing and Huo Qubing north to drive back the Xiongnu and expand the realm, and dispatched Zhang Qian to open routes to the Western Regions, creating the Silk Road.

In the Western Han's later years, the imperial in-laws seized power. In 8 AD, Wang Mang usurped the throne and founded the Xin dynasty. His disordered reforms sparked rebellion and warfare. In 25 AD, Liu Xiu put an end to the fighting and founded the Eastern Han, ushering in the Restoration of Emperor Guangwu. The later Rule of Emperors Ming and Zhang continued the era of prosperity.

In the middle and late Eastern Han, eunuchs and the imperial in-laws took turns wielding power. The Yellow Turban Rebellion of 184 shook the foundations of imperial rule, and powerful local clans seized the opportunity to establish their own domains. In 220, Cao Pi usurped the Han throne, bringing the dynasty to an end and ushering in the Three Kingdoms era.

The Han dynasty laid the foundation for a unified, multiethnic China. From then on, the Huaxia people were commonly known as the Han people, and the dynasty's political institutions and cultural thought exerted a profound and lasting influence.

Following the course of history, this novel highlights important figures and pivotal events, remains true to the historical record, and uses vivid, accessible prose to portray the Han dynasty's complete rise and fall, from its founding and golden age to its decline.
