Surgical Saint: The Ming Dynasty Emergency Room

In the early years of the Chongzhen reign of the Ming dynasty, the realm was in turmoil. Surgery was considered an inferior form of medicine, leaving ordinary people with acute illnesses no one could treat. Shen Yanzhi, the son of a family of physicians in Jiangnan, was forced to flee to the capital after his family was wrongfully accused. After witnessing people helplessly seeking medical care, he resolved to use his exceptional surgical skills to save lives. He opened a makeshift emergency clinic in the backyard of an old pharmacy.

Defying traditional customs and the constraints of conservative medical practice, he devised new surgical methods and improved medical tools, specializing in traumatic injuries, acute abdominal conditions, and epidemics. In the process, he faced rejection from quack doctors and harassment from the powerful, struggling to survive. Fortunately, Su Qinghe, Zhou Chengyu, and others came to his aid. The emergency clinic gradually grew from a humble courtyard into the "Hall of Salvation," trusted by ordinary people. He also cleared his family's name and helped bring reform to the Imperial Medical Academy.

In an age of chaos, Shen Yanzhi held fast to his calling as a physician and refused high office and riches. With his scalpel as his "weapon" and compassion as his guiding light, he protected the people through war and plague. In time, he became a master surgeon, and his skill and spirit lived on.
