Apocalypse Web Novels (末世) Explained: Zombies, Hoarding and Wastelands

The world ends in chapter one, and the hero is one of the few who saw it coming. That setup has its own shelf on every Chinese web novel platform.

末世 (mòshì) means "the last age", and in a web novel it means the end of the world as the hero knew it. A virus turns people into zombies. An ice age, a flood or a heat wave rewrites the map. The sky tears open and monsters walk out. What follows is a survival story, usually with a twist that gives the hero an edge.

As of 24 October 2026, the Apocalypse tag (末世) is on about 62,500 books on Fanqie, about 19,800 on JJWXC, about 7,900 on Qidian, about 3,800 on Zongheng and about 2,900 on Qimao. Faloo has no tag by that name, but its Doomsday tag (末日) covers about 5,200 books. See the tag on Fanqie, by all-time reads.

What makes a book 末世

Three things show up almost every time.

  • A collapse. Society as it was is gone, or about to be. Governments fail, supplies run out, and the rules change overnight.
  • Scarcity. Food, water, shelter and a safe place to sleep become the plot. Fights are usually about resources, not ideology.
  • A hero with a head start. Either they know what's coming (rebirth), or they have a tool nobody else has (a pocket space, a system), or they're simply tougher.

The head start matters. In the English-language corner of the genre, people often expect grim survival horror. A lot of Chinese 末世 is closer to a power fantasy with a countdown: the hero prepares, outlasts and builds. The tone ranges from bleak to cozy, so the tags below are worth more than the genre label.

The sub-flavours

丧尸 · Zombies. The classic outbreak. Qidian has Zombies on about 480 books, Qimao about 900, Zongheng about 380, and Faloo about 3,100. Fanqie has the tag on only a handful, so use its Apocalypse tag there.

天灾 · Natural disaster. Ice age, flood, drought, extreme heat. The world is the enemy and no monster is needed. Fanqie's Natural Disaster tag is on about 15,300 books.

末日求生 · Doomsday survival. A big label on Fanqie, where Doomsday Survival is on about 37,400 books. It's the shelf for books where staying alive is the whole point.

囤货 · Hoarding. The hero stocks up before the disaster: food, water, weapons, a whole warehouse. It's the comfort end of the genre, since the hero starts with a pantry nobody else has. JJWXC's Stock Up tag is on about 1,000 books.

空间 · Spatial ability. A pocket space, a private farm, a storeroom that holds anything. It pairs naturally with hoarding. Fanqie's Spatial Ability is on about 60,400 books, and Qidian's on about 3,500. On JJWXC the nearest tag is 随身空间, Spatial Ability, about 13,200 books. Books with both Apocalypse and Spatial Ability: about 9,600 on Fanqie and about 400 on Qidian.

重生 · Rebirth before the end. The hero dies in the apocalypse and wakes up days or years earlier, with every lesson intact. About 15,100 Fanqie books carry both Apocalypse and Rebirth, about 2,300 on JJWXC and about 1,300 on Qidian. For how rebirth differs from transmigration, see the comparison.

系统 · System apocalypse. A game interface arrives with the end of the world and assigns quests. About 22,000 Fanqie books carry both Apocalypse and System, and about 2,000 on JJWXC. System novels, explained.

废土 · Wasteland. The collapse is long past. People live in ruins, scavenge, trade and fight over what's left. Fanqie's Wasteland tag is on about 14,400 books, JJWXC's on about 2,700 and Faloo's on about 490.

基建 · Base building. The hero turns a shelter into a town. Fanqie's Base Building combined with Apocalypse is about 1,800 books, and JJWXC's about 850.

Why readers like it

Apocalypse fiction suits serial writing. Every chapter has a problem: a shortage, an attack, a bad neighbour. The hero solves it and the reader sees the stockpile grow. It's a loop that works from the first chapter.

The second draw is the thought experiment. What would you pack, where would you go, who would you trust? The best books answer those questions with some care, and the weakest ones skip to the fighting.

If you like the point-and-reward rhythm but want something with more structure, infinite flow is the cousin.

Where to find it on each platform

The platforms don't organise this the same way.

Fanqie has the most. It has a Sci-Fi & Apocalypse genre with about 78,300 books as their main genre, and a tag layer on top. Browse the genre, or use the Apocalypse tag for books that are apocalypse stories in other genres, such as a romance or a rural-life book set after the end. Fanqie, explained.

JJWXC uses tags, and apocalypse is a big one: Apocalypse, about 19,800 books. JJWXC, explained.

Qidian files apocalypse under Sci-Fi, as the subgenre Apocalyptic Crisis (末世危机). Sci-Fi, Apocalyptic Crisis lists about 16,300 books. The Apocalypse tag is on about 7,900 books.

Qimao has the same subgenre, Sci-Fi, Apocalyptic Crisis, about 1,600 books, and the Apocalypse tag on about 2,900. Nearly all of its Apocalypse books are finished (see the table below), so it's a good place to start if you hate waiting for updates.

Zongheng has Sci-Fi, Apocalyptic Crisis, about 2,500 books, and the Apocalypse tag on about 3,800.

Faloo has no Apocalypse tag. Use Doomsday, about 5,200 books, and Zombies. Faloo, explained.

How many are finished

Apocalypse books are long, and many are still running. Books with the Apocalypse tag that are marked completed, as of 24 October 2026, rounded:

Platform Tagged Completed
Fanqie 62,500 25,300
JJWXC 19,800 4,900
Qidian 7,900 4,300
Zongheng 3,800 2,200
Qimao 2,900 2,700
Faloo (Doomsday tag) 5,200 340

Qimao stands out, with nearly everything finished. Faloo is the opposite, with almost everything still running or abandoned. How to tell finished from still updating.

How to filter

Start with the tag, then narrow.

Reading a synopsis

A few phrases give the flavour away.

  • "Before the disaster" or "three days before" means rebirth with a head start.
  • "Stockpile", "warehouse" or "supplies" means hoarding.
  • "Pocket space" or "private dimension" means spatial ability.
  • "Ruins", "settlement" or "scavengers" points to a wasteland.
  • "Bound to a system" means a system apocalypse.

With Show Chinese on (the last row of the header's More menu), 末世, 末日 and 囤货 in a title confirm it. The tag glossary covers the vocabulary around them.
