Infinite Flow Novels Explained: 无限流 and Where to Find It

A group of strangers wakes up somewhere they shouldn't be, with a task and a timer. Survive, get paid, do it again. That loop is a whole genre.

Infinite flow (无限流, sometimes "unlimited flow") is one of the few Chinese web novel genres with no real Western shelf to put it on. It isn't a setting. It's a structure: the characters are pulled into a series of self-contained, usually lethal scenarios, each with its own rules, and have to get through one to reach the next.

If you've read a novel where a team is dropped into a horror film, then a zombie city, then a murder mystery on a train, with a points shop in between, that was infinite flow.

Where the name comes from

The genre takes its name from one novel: 无限恐怖, serialised on Qidian from 2007 and known in English fan circles as Terror Infinity. Its setup became the template. An unseen power, the 主神 or "Main God", gathers people in a hub space and sends them in teams into worlds borrowed from horror and action films. Finish the mission and you earn points to spend on abilities, gear and healing. Fail and you die.

Readers started calling everything built that way 无限流, "infinite style", after the title. 流 here means a school or current of writing, the same word as in 系统流 (system) and 无敌流 (invincible lead). Translators render it "flow", and the name stuck.

What makes a book infinite flow

Four things, and most books have all of them:

  • A hub and instances. A safe space between missions, and the missions themselves, which Chinese readers call 副本: "instances" or "dungeons", a word taken from online games.
  • Rules that change every time. Each instance has its own logic to work out. This is the genre's real pleasure. It lets one book be a haunted-house story, a heist and a courtroom drama in sequence.
  • Stakes that are usually fatal. Dying in the instance is dying. The cast turns over.
  • A reward loop. Points, items, skills, ranks. The lead gets stronger between instances, which is what keeps a long serial moving.

The second and fourth items explain why the form suits serial writing so well. An author who runs out of road just opens a new instance.

The branches

Nearly twenty years on, 无限流 is a family more than a single genre.

Borrowed worlds. The original shape: instances are films, games, anime and other novels. On Qidian this grew into a whole channel, 诸天无限, which the site labels Infinite Myriad Worlds. 诸天 means "all the heavens": the lead crosses from one fictional universe to the next, often alone and often keeping what they pick up. It shades into fanfiction.

Original instances. The author designs every scenario from scratch, usually as horror or puzzle-solving. This is the branch that dominates on JJWXC and Fanqie now.

Thriller games and livestreams. The instances are framed as a game with players, levels and sometimes an audience watching and betting. On Fanqie, try Infinite Flow together with Livestream (直播).

Rule-based horror. The newest cousin, 规则怪谈: the lead finds a list of rules ("do not answer the phone after midnight", "the guard in the red uniform is not staff") and survives by working out which ones are true. Fanqie has a tag for it: Rule-based Horror.

Infinite flow romance. On JJWXC the instances are the plot and a pairing runs through them. Much of it is danmei, with two leads who meet in the instances, and there's plenty with no romance at all.

Infinite flow or quick transmigration?

They get confused, because both hop between worlds. The difference is what the lead is there to do.

Infinite flow 无限流 Quick transmigration 快穿
The lead enters as Themselves, usually in a team A character in that world's story
The job Survive and clear the instance Finish a task, usually fixing someone's fate
Tone Tense, often horror Often romance or revenge, lighter
Death Common, and final Rare
Who reads it All audiences Mostly the female-oriented side

Quick transmigration has its own tag, here on JJWXC and on Fanqie. The label glossary covers it and its neighbours.

Where each platform keeps it

The tag is called Infinite Flow on every platform that uses it, and it's the same tag everywhere, so the links below differ only in the platform.

Each platform's whole tag vocabulary, with how many books carry each tag, is on its tag index: Qidian, Fanqie, JJWXC, Faloo, Qimao and Zongheng. That's the place to check whether a trope you have in mind has a tag at all.

How to pick one

The genre's weak point is the same as its strength. A book is a string of instances, so it can stop after any of them, and a lot of infinite flow serials do stop. Three filters deal with that.

Finished first. Completed infinite flow on JJWXC, by favorites and completed on Fanqie, by all-time reads are the two safest lists. An infinite flow novel with an ending had an author who planned the way out.

Or alive. If you want to follow one as it comes out, turn on Hide dropped, which removes unfinished books with no new chapter in six months. Ongoing infinite flow on Qidian, dropped hidden, newest update first. How Hide dropped works.

Clicks per chapter on JJWXC. Completed infinite flow danmei by clicks per chapter ranks by the average clicks on each chapter, so it favours books that kept their readers through the later instances and not only the first.

Then use the exclude box. If you want puzzles and no pairing on Fanqie, exclude the romance tags. If you want original scenarios on Faloo, exclude Anime Crossover.

Reading the synopsis

Synopses here are in English, translated from the platform's own. A few words tell you what you're looking at:

  • Instance, dungeon or copy are all 副本. Any of them confirms the structure.
  • Main God, the system or a named game is the hub.
  • No CP means no romantic pairing. On JJWXC it's a category of its own.
  • Infinite in the title is usually 无限, the genre naming itself.

The Chinese title is always printed under the English one on a book page. Turn on Show Chinese names, the 中 button in the header, to see it in every list as well, and 无限 becomes easy to spot.

Where to start

  1. Decide which branch you want: borrowed worlds (Qidian, Faloo), original horror and puzzles (JJWXC, Fanqie), or rule lists (Fanqie).
  2. Open that platform's Infinite Flow view, filter to Completed, and read the first page of synopses.
  3. Found one you like? Its page lists the booklists it appears in, and infinite flow readers keep very specific lists. Why booklists work.
