How to Find Finished Classics and Novels That Are Still Updating

On JJWXC, fewer than one "ongoing" book in twelve got an update in the last three months. The status field can't tell you which ones are alive. The Updated filter can.

Every novel on these platforms is marked either ongoing (连载) or completed (完结). Completed is reliable: an author has to go and mark it. Ongoing is just what a book is until someone does, so it covers books getting a chapter every day and books whose author walked away in 2019.

How big is the gap? We took a sample of listed ongoing books on each platform in late September 2026 and checked when each was last updated by its author:

Updated in the last 3 months Updated in the last year
Fanqie about 28% about 61%
Qidian about 17% about 64%
JJWXC about 8% about 20%
Faloo about 3% about 7%

So on Faloo, a book marked ongoing is far more likely to be abandoned than active. On JJWXC it's not much better. The status filter alone won't sort that out.

The Updated filter

Every catalogue on DaoSearch has an Updated filter, at the end of the filter panel. The options are Within 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years and 4 years.

It uses the date the author last updated the book on its own platform, not the date DaoSearch last checked it. So "Updated within 3 months" means the book itself got something new in that time.

It works on every platform, it combines with every other filter and sort, and saved searches keep it. Since it's relative, a saved search with "within 1 month" always means the last month from the day you open it.

Four ways to use it, then one way to do without it.

Long, and still going

The classic worry with a web novel is starting something four million characters long and finding it stopped a year ago. Filter for long books that are ongoing and updated recently, and that worry goes away.

Ongoing Qidian books over 2 million characters, updated within a month, by monthly votes. There are about 3,700 ongoing Qidian books past 2 million characters, and roughly 1,500 of them got something new in the last month. At the top when we checked were 夜无疆 (Night Without Borders) by 辰东, just past 4 million characters, and 玄鉴仙族 (The Immortal Xuan Clan), past 6.3 million.

Swap in a genre or a tag and you have a shortlist of long books in your lane that you won't have to abandon halfway.

Just finished

A completed book with a recent update date usually finished recently. That's the sweet spot for a lot of readers: the whole thing is out, and people are still talking about it.

Completed Fanqie books updated within 3 months, by all-time reads. When we checked, the top of that list was 凡骨 (Mortal Bones), an 8.3-million-character book last updated in late August, followed by 诡舍 (The Haunted House).

Authors sometimes post an extra chapter or two after the ending, so "recently updated" and "recently finished" aren't exactly the same thing. They're close enough to be useful.

Still going, on the platform where most books aren't

On JJWXC and Faloo, where most ongoing books have gone quiet, the filter matters most. Two to try:

Without the filter, both lists are full of books with a big following and no chapter in years.

Keep it recent

The longer windows are for a softer version of the same question. Web fiction moves fast, and a book that finished eight years ago reads like it. "Within 2 years" or "Within 4 years" on a completed list keeps it to books from the current era of the genre, without narrowing it down to last month's endings.

Completed Qidian books updated within 2 years, by Fans is a good example: finished, popular, and recent enough to feel current.

Old classics: skip the filter, change the sort

For the older gems, the ones that finished years ago and are still loved, don't use Updated at all. Filter to completed and sort by a number that only ever grows:

Add a genre or tag to any of these. "Completed cultivation on Qidian by Fans" is a better starting list than any top-ten you'll find elsewhere.

Two sort tricks

Updated, descending shows what's moving right now in whatever you've filtered. It's a good way to see which books in a genre are actively being written this week.

Flip to Ascending. Every sort has a Descending and Ascending switch next to it. Updated, ascending puts the books that have gone longest without an update at the top, which is mostly useful for checking how much of a filter set is abandoned before you start digging.

Keep it

Built a search you like? Choose Save search in the filters and it keeps the Updated filter with everything else. Saved searches and shelves are explained here.

And if an ongoing book looks great but you'd rather wait for the ending, put it on your Planned shelf. The daily digest tells you when its status changes to completed.
