Silence Beneath the Gears

Set against the fall of Wuxi in 1938, the novel tells the story of Wu Mingyuan, a highly accomplished mechanical engineering graduate who is forced to swallow an underground list and then struggles to survive in silence. The work seeks to show that in the darkest of times, resistance does not always stem from lofty ideals. More often, it is simply about holding on to the basic principles of being human. The author moves away from the traditional sense of triumph found in war-of-resistance stories, focusing instead on the psychological distortion and struggle for survival experienced by individuals in extreme circumstances. Through scenes in which Wu Mingyuan uses his mechanical expertise to stage “industrial accidents” in a factory, the novel explores the conflict between technological ethics and the violence of war. Ultimately, it suggests that more than grand, spectacular sacrifice, it is the resilience to quietly hold fast where no one can see and grit one’s teeth to survive in despair that forms the truest foundation of a nation’s spirit.
