Mayitas in Xinjiang was once a rare blizzard disaster zone in China, with over 150 days a year of winds reaching Force 8 or higher. Known as the "Devil's Wind Zone," it was a place where more than 400,000 people of all ethnic groups in Tacheng fought a desperate, year-round battle against the wind demon. To rescue people caught in windblown snow disasters, the Mayitas rescue base was established. A special force promoting ethnic unity, made up of 20 people from seven ethnic groups, remained stationed year-round in the ice and snow, bringing hope of survival to those in despair.
Xiao Shan, deputy captain of the rescue base, resigned to take responsibility after his fiancee died in a windblown snow disaster. He spent ten years in seclusion at Laofengkou, eventually conquering a blizzard disaster unseen in a century and achieving redemption.
Over the years, Xinjiang has attached great importance to managing Laofengkou in Mayitas, vigorously advancing the "windbreak and snow-blocking" project and the "wind power generation" project. Laofengkou has changed from a notorious "wind and snow disaster zone" into a renowned "wind and snow treasure land." Today, people of all ethnic groups in Mayitas have long been living happy, secure lives.
