A Chronicle of Love and Revenge in Troubled Times

Setting: From the end of the Western Han dynasty to the beginning of the Eastern Han dynasty.

Protagonist: The protagonist, Qiu Jiu, was originally surnamed Zhang. His father changed his surname to Qiu and left him these last words: "You may use the surname Zhang again when your enemies have been slain and your grievances avenged!"

While still an infant, the protagonist becomes a victim of palace intrigue. Everyone in his family is massacred except for his father and himself. The reason for the massacre is unknown, and the identity of the enemy is unclear. When he is twelve, his father is killed as well. Qiu Jiu then embarks on a perilous quest to uncover the truth and destroy his enemies.

His journey of revenge unfolds alongside the fall of the Western Han and the founding of the Eastern Han. Historical events such as Wang Mang's usurpation of the Han throne, the Green Forest and Red Eyebrows rebellions, and the founding of the Eastern Han are all deeply intertwined with his fate.

Self-assessment: The writing is elegant, the plot full of twists, and the story ingeniously crafted. Though fantastical, it remains grounded in plausibility, and every incredible plot point and element is given a reasonable explanation. This is the book's guiding principle. The poems woven throughout the novel are another highlight.
