The Divine Craftsman Who Hates Magic

When I was eight, I caught the village Party secretary and Widow Li having an affair at the mountain temple behind the village. The next day, I became mute. Ten years later, while our family was renovating the old house, a dried snake nailed shut fell from a roof beam. Its head was pointed straight at the bed where I had slept for sixteen years. The old carpenter with nine fingers took one look and his face changed. "This is a snake nailed shut to seal your throat. Someone wants to keep you silent forever!" Only later did I learn this was just the beginning. Ghostly happenings at construction sites, paper figures walking at night, puppets hanging from beams, seven evil nails... The source of each and every inexplicable disaster was never ghosts or monsters, but the human heart!
