Autumn of the Seventeenth Year of Chongzhen

In the Jiashen Catastrophe, the emperor died for his country, and Wu Sangui led the Qing troops through the pass. With the realm in chaos and foreign invaders seeking to seize the throne, could the land of Huaxia truly have no loyal ministers? Beneath the walls of Qingzhou, enemy troops laid siege to the city. He Tuo urged surrender: "Wang Shiheng, give in! You've fought hard enough!" In the isolated city of Yangzhou, Duo Duo shot a letter urging surrender into the city: "If you surrender, General, you can be made a duke or marquis!" In Nanjing, Qian Qianyi said, "The tide has turned against us. A gentleman should not stand beneath a crumbling wall. Shiheng, you should understand when a dynasty has risen or fallen. For your own sake, it would be better to surrender now. You could become a high-ranking official!" Wang Yan shouted angrily, "This is not a change of dynasties within the Han realm. The foreign invaders have invaded the south! This is not merely the fall of a state, but the ruin of all under heaven! We scholars have received the country's favor for generations and eaten the court's stipend. We must be loyal to our sovereign. How can we disregard the survival of our civilization just to save our own lives?"
