At the time, the Ming Empire is beset by troubles at home and abroad. Within, Yan Song and his son hold power; without, Japanese pirates run rampant. The vast Eastern Empire can no longer bear the strain and begins its decline from the height of its prosperity.

Around the same time, Western nations have already embarked on the Age of Discovery and the opening of new sea routes.
