A mix of hard and soft sci-fi, including both civilization-building stories and tales of the protagonist's growth. These are sci-fi novels I think suit my tastes: they have fresh settings, relatively complete frameworks, and are enjoyable to read. The male and female leads shouldn't be total airheads, and they should have some brains. I love reading. I like books with openings that impress me instead of feeling stale, middles that keep me hooked instead of following the same old formula, and endings that hold together and leave me thinking. At its heart, a novel is a story. If the beginning rambles, makes no sense, has characters acting like idiots, leans too heavily on clichés, or is drowning in chuunibyou, chances are the rest won't be any better. A story doesn't have to follow the rules of reality. It can let its imaginati
