This list is devoted to Primordial World stories and similar novels, with the Primordial World as their main setting. It's meant to offer fellow readers a feast of primordial-themed fiction, with something for every taste.
These are books I've read and enjoyed. The list includes classics that are complete as well as newer books that are still worth reading. I won't cover books that have been removed, abandoned, or censored. There are also many stories based on Journey to the West, so they aren't included here for now.
The term "primordial" refers to a chaotic, nebulous state, and by extension to ancient times. Primordial fiction covers the battles of the ancient world, from Pangu's creation of heaven and earth, Hongjun's attainment of the Dao, and the great wars, to Nuwa Creates Humans, Investiture of the Gods, and Journey to the West. These stories use the rise and fall of dynasties to reflect the karmic struggles among the sages.
The origins and background of primordial fiction can therefore be traced to vernacular classics such as Investiture of the Gods and Journey to the West.
Primordial-inspired fiction borrows from the conventions of primordial stories without following their systems exactly. Many common terms from primordial fiction also appear in these related works.
Investiture of the Gods focuses on the conflict between different religious sects. The struggle between the Chan Sect and the Interception Sect runs throughout the Shang-Zhou War, but both sects were invented by the author. "Chan" means to expound or clarify. The Book of Changes says, "The Changes illuminate the past and discern the future, revealing the subtle and clarifying the hidden." The origin of the name "Interception Sect" is unknown.
