I've been reading web novels since 2003, without missing a single day for 14 years.
Back then, I hunted through the endless libraries of sites like Qidian, Longkong, Huanjian, and Adventurers' Paradise. These days, I look for what I love among all kinds of rankings. I've witnessed the rise and decline of every major author, and the birth and evolution of every genre. Web fiction began with only a few genres, like poorly imitated Western fantasy and urban fiction. After more than ten years of development, it's blossomed into a rich variety of finely defined categories. That's thanks to countless authors who devoted their talent to creating something new, offering one brilliant idea after another and giving us more than a decade of fresh, surprising reading experiences. Thank you to every author who has worked hard to write great web fiction, whether successful or not!
This list includes works I've read, past and present, that left a deep impression on me. They vary in subject, style, and year of publication, but they share a few things: clear, fluent writing; coherent plots and a strong central storyline; consistent worldbuilding that holds together; and a distinctive identity. No harems or womanizers. Most of the protagonists are levelheaded and calm at heart.
Ideas and writing techniques in web fiction keep growing and evolving. Stories may be full of jokes and closely tied to current events, and books that felt exciting at the time may seem simplistic and immaturely written today. That's unavoidable. Still, quite a few works remain vivid and wonderful even now.
