Belated Silence

In the autumn of 2006, the new school year began for third grade, and a transfer student arrived in the classroom. Liu Wanqiu paid no attention. He was just another classmate. She had no idea that the boy sitting beside her would carry a torch for her for twenty whole years.

They were the most familiar strangers in each other's lives: classmates for four years, from third grade through the first year of middle school, then never again hearing a thing about each other's schooling. Their only connection was a lit QQ avatar, appearing on and off from their youth well into adulthood.

That year, beneath the willow tree, the class labor monitor asked her a question on his behalf. He looked down to tie his shoelaces and gave a one-word answer. That one word kept them circling each other for twenty years.

In 2019, Liu Wanqiu went to Shanghai for an internship. It was the darkest time of her life. That year, their QQ conversations gradually grew less frequent. Eventually, they almost stopped altogether.

He wrote a book called Diary Beneath the Willow Tree. He hadn't published it; he showed it to her first.

On September 28, 2026, he suddenly sent her a message. There was no reason. He just wanted to get in touch. She was in Chengdu, and he was in Shenzhen. Through the screen, she picked up, one by one, the words she had left unsaid all those years.

She said she understood. Then she said, "As expected, mute people aren't cut out for romance."

Later, she told him on WeChat, "If I'd said I liked you back then, it might have been a different story."

This isn't a story about two people getting together. It's a story about two people who stayed silent, and finally broke that silence after twenty years.
