The Sacred Seat of Medicine

Lin En was an emergency physician on Earth. He died suddenly after a night shift that lasted thirty-six hours straight.

When he opened his eyes again, he was in the back room of a barbershop in the age of bloodletting. This world had no microscopes, no statistics, and no one had even thought of the word "verify." Truth was declared by authority, and evidence was ignored. Bloodletting depended on the stars, midwives were forbidden to wash their hands, and a single bout of puerperal fever could claim half the new mothers on a street.

He started beneath the barber pole. A basin of handwashing water saved the first patient everyone had written off as "beyond saving." A secret ledger of deaths became the first lever he could use to shift the age.

Apprentices weren't allowed to ask questions, so he let his case records speak for him. The guild blocked him at every turn, so he built his own shed outside its walls. On the night he saved a laborer with a ruptured gut in full view of the crowd, the whole city remembered the barbershop apprentice: he had something in his hands that did not belong to this age.

But he soon discovered that disease was far from the only thing killing people in this age.

Armed with four hundred years of answers and standing in a world where nothing had ever been verified, the first thing he had to teach was so simple that everyone laughed at it:

Wash your hands.
