On Huajiang Bridge

[Realist fiction | Dual narrative, long-form novel | Bridge builders | Entry in the Realist Fiction Writing Contest]

In 1898, at the mouth of the Huajiang Gorge. The bridge project was in its third year: the autumn floods swept away the stone bridge, the iron cables stretched halfway across the river, and a sudden gale brought down the rocky outcrop. On the day they tried to string the cables for a third time, the cable snapped and sank, taking two young men down into the river.

Master Jiang Bingtang stayed behind. He tucked the broken end of the rope into his sleeve, built a shelter on the cliff, and recorded the wind day after day: when it came, which route it took, time after time, until he'd learned to make it yield.

January 2025. The world's highest bridge is waiting to be joined. It is the key controlling project of the Lu'an Expressway: the deck stands 625 meters above the river, nearly 60 meters higher than the previous record holder, the Beipanjiang Bridge. Its main span is 1,420 meters, and its total length is 2,890 meters, making it the world's largest by both measures. But the two halves of the steel girder have been facing each other in the clouds for two months. They can see each other, but can't reach, waiting for the same window of wind speed. Chief Engineer Pei Wangshan has spent three years listening to the wind, learning every nuance of this gorge. Today, the wind knows him.

The older generation bargained with the river using their lives; this generation bargains with the wind using numbers. Separated by 127 years, both generations are doing the same thing:

A natural barrier is a matter of chance. A bridge is an act of will.

(This is a long-form novel, not an engineering account. The 625 meters and 1,420 meters are real; the story is fictional.)
