A Misprinted Civilization

Every world in the Myriad Worlds has its own canon. But Shen Yan discovers that canon isn't necessarily correct. An ancient opera passed down for six hundred years has all its roles in place, yet it never reaches its ending. A renowned city of engineering, hailed as the greatest under heaven, has towers built with iron and bronze as their bones, while its thousand-year-old ancestral tower has no nails or metal and has never fallen despite countless disasters. A musical capital where ten thousand performers play in a sound that carries for a hundred miles, yet not one of them notices that a beat has vanished from their score... Shen Yan, a proofreader of ancient texts and records of intangible cultural heritage, unexpectedly obtains a “variant-text seal.” It doesn't tell him the right answer. It only tells him: Someone changed this. From opera, music, folk arts, and dance to traditional crafts, fine arts, medicine, and folk customs... When the same “authorized-text seal” appears in ten different traditions, Shen Yan finally realizes: What someone wants to change has never been a single art form. It's the entire civilization's ability to create a new version of itself.
