Regrets at Forty

I'm Wei Shuo, a man born in the 1980s. I'm forty, and it's been a year since I got out of prison. My career has collapsed, I'm divorced, my credit is ruined, and I'm saddled with debt. I make ends meet by going door to door to install security cameras and repair internet connections. When I was young, I devoted myself to making money, driven by the shame of growing up poor. I always thought there would be plenty of time later. I let down the people who truly loved me, time and again. My child longed for my company, and my partner waited for me to come home, but I ignored them both. Only when I came across an old photograph did I see the farewell written on its back, hidden for twenty years. I spent half a lifetime chasing after things. I loved, and I missed it all.
