The Ten Thousand Demons' Record of Reincarnation Li Tiezhu of Kaoshantun is forty years old, an honest farmer, and a man who just can't keep his mouth shut. He'll chat with the chickens for half an hour while feeding them, and even mutters to himself as he walks. One day, a bolt of lightning knocks his soul out of his body and sends it drifting into a primeval world newly formed from chaos. The will of that wilderness has the mind of a two- or three-year-old. It believes everything Li Tiezhu says, but always gets it wrong. He wants to land and rest for a while. He opens his eyes as a sika deer, runs with his legs all tangled up, and tumbles headfirst into a ditch. He wants a thick shell. He opens his eyes as a dung beetle, only to have his dung ball stolen by one of its own kind. He wants to burrow underground for protection. He opens his eyes as a pangolin, then gets so embarrassed when he meets an old tortoise that he burrows three meters underground. He wants to be a little bigger. He opens his eyes as a qilin-like beast, so ugly that even the young animals turn and run when they see him. Later, he turns into foxtail grass, a giant salamander, and a softshell turtle. Each transformation gets more ridiculous, and no matter how much he wants to die, he just can't. Every time things start to get comfortable, every time things go his way, he opens his mouth and ruins it all. This story can be summed up in one line: His mouth makes him, and his mouth breaks him.
