Ballad of the Penglai Sea Crossing

Beyond the Eastern Sea, Penglai hangs above the vast blue waters, celebrated since ancient times as an immortal mountain. In the land of Qi and Lu, Mount Tai stands as the eastern guardian, while the heavenly laws endure through the ages, and tales of immortals crossing the sea are passed down from generation to generation. A young woodcutter named A Shi was born in a fishing village in Dengzhou, across from Penglai. Since childhood, he had listened to old sailors tell stories of the Eight Immortals crossing the sea. He kept watch over a crumbling seaside temple to the Sea God, making a living by gathering firewood in the hills and fishing in the sea. For years, strange disasters had plagued the waters off Dengzhou. Giant waves swallowed ships, and sea fog sent vessels off course. Fishermen who went out to sea never returned. Everyone blamed sea monsters, but A Shi accidentally discovered that the disasters stemmed from the weakening seal on Penglai. Legend said the Eight Immortals had not crossed the sea merely to attain the Dao and ascend to immortality. They had sacrificed their souls to lock away an ancient calamity beneath the Eastern Sea. Countless ages had passed, and the seal was failing. Disaster was about to surge ashore and devour the countless villages of Qi and Lu. A Shi had only wanted to protect his fishing village and keep his loved ones safe. But with disaster closing in, he set out on a perilous voyage to find Penglai, carrying half of a broken jade token left behind by the Eight Immortals. Along the way, he met a Taoist nun from Mount Tai who clung to an obsession, a wandering painter immortal, and an old craftsman who guarded an ancient shrine. Together, they traveled to the ancient temples of Mount Tai and the old stockades of Jiaodong, searching for the relics left behind by the Eight Immortals and uncovering the truth concealed beneath generations of myth. Immortals were not aloof, carefree beings who lived forever. The so-called Eight Immortals were ordinary people who had shouldered the calamity threatening all life with their mortal bodies. The path to immortality had never been about seeking eternal life and wealth. It was about learning to take responsibility. The young man left behind the security of his own small world, faced the source of the disaster, and carried on the protection the Eight Immortals had begun. In the end, he sought no ascension to immortality. All he wanted was a calm sea and peace for the people, year after year.
