Rules of the Strange: The Evernight Sichuan Restaurant

On the seventh day after being laid off by AI, Shen Zhan returns to the old Sichuan restaurant his father left him, only to discover that the entire city resets its rules after dark.

[Late-Night Overtime Instance] Coworkers are trapped endlessly revising drafts. [Residential Parking Instance] A fight over parking spaces turns people into human signposts. [Riverside Body Retrieval Instance] The corpses in the river come with short-drama storyboards. [Year-End Bonus Instance] The whole company receives just 1.9 yuan... Anyone who breaks the rules is directly "archived" as an NPC.

Others rely on supernatural abilities to break the rules. Shen Zhan has two things on his side: the "eye for loopholes" he honed while storyboarding short dramas for five years, and "one dish, one rule" from his father's recipes. Twice-cooked pork breaks the overtime loop, pickled fish quells the resentment beneath the river, and boiled cabbage suppresses the old market instance. Labor arbitrators recite the law, body retrievers bargain with water ghosts, and artifact restorers read the last words of the dead. The city's obscure trades all join forces to dismantle the instances.

But the more instances he clears, the more wrong things seem. The mastermind, "Perfect Update Intelligence," feeds on workers' anxiety to make short dramas, while twenty years ago his father used Sichuan cuisine to seal away an eternal night. Now his father is trapped in the System and being used as a template.

Shen Zhan rekindles the fire and tosses the wok. "You turn my suffering into traffic? I'll turn your script into a side dish."

One plate of twice-cooked pork, and the rules are fried back to their original form.
