Blood Sacrifice at Sanhuichang

One bitter winter in the Republic of China era, at Sanhuichang in eastern Sichuan, the Fu River ran right through town. He Chengye, helmsman of the Huairen Society, had a short left arm, the tendons severed in a battle on the ridge twenty years ago. He could keep a whole hall of sworn brothers in line, but not his nineteen-year-old daughter Qingyi. With her mother's copper-handled scissors tucked away, she crossed the river night after night to study at Mingde Society's school, the first in Sanhuichang to keep a lamp lit for female students. Before the New Year's wine had even settled, a muffled gunshot rang out. His brothers pinned a man to a stone table to "leave him in one piece," and blood splashed across the cured meat. A deposition from twenty years ago resurfaced from old papers, its ink still fresh. Petitions delivered to the district office, pacification commissioners, and old names on a joint letter all pushed father and daughter toward opposite riverbanks. On this side of the river stood an old banner faded to purple; on the other, a warm square of window glowing in the snow. Only at the very end did He Chengye understand: what he had to protect wasn't that empty chair, but the lamp. Yet the one who had to cross the river toward it was, of all people, himself. Snow fell over Sanhuichang, again and again. The light across the river never went out.
