A Thousand Years of Romance: The Might of Qin and Han

A Thousand Years of Splendor is a historical fiction series. Organized along a timeline, it includes volumes such as The Glory of Qin and Han, Clouds over Wei and Jin, The Grandeur of Tang and Song, The Pulse of Mongol Yuan, and The Founding of Ming and Qing. Each volume stands on its own while connecting with the others, together painting a sweeping portrait of two thousand years of Chinese civilization. The series uses people as its warp and events as its weft, selecting the most representative historical figures and pivotal moments of the Qin and Han eras and unfolding their stories one by one. From Liu Bang founding the Han dynasty and the peaceful reigns of Emperors Wen and Jing, to Emperor Wu’s expansion of the empire; from the restoration under Emperor Guangwu and the stable reigns of Emperors Ming and Zhang, to the alternating dominance of imperial in-laws and eunuchs and the decline of the Eastern Han: each period is built on detailed historical sources and enriched with literary imagination, remaining faithful to the facts while accessible to general readers. The series pays particular attention to the perspective of ordinary people. History is not just a family tree of emperors and generals; it is also the joys and sorrows of countless everyday lives. Zhao Er selling vegetables, Auntie Liu buying radishes, and Li Laoshuan working his fields: these fictional yet lifelike characters appear throughout the grand sweep of history, letting readers see both the heights of the imperial court and the breadth of the world beyond it. Their conversations, emotions, and fates form the backdrop of history. In its approach, the series follows the principle of “major events must be accurate, minor details need not be.” Whatever is recorded in the historical texts is presented faithfully; what they leave unrecorded is reasonably imagined. The writing aims to be concise, lively, and humorous, avoiding academic jargon and preachiness. At the end of each piece, “A Thousand-Year Look Back” draws a brief, thought-provoking lesson from history, without belaboring the point.
