Level

At a river-control construction site during the Kangxi reign, an illiterate water-measuring laborer uses a measuring rod marked with nine notches, left by his father, and a wooden basin of water to measure the true thickness of the embankment. But he discovers that making the river flow according to his measurements will mean holding some other people's homes beneath the water forever.
