The Rise and Fall of Jin: Embers of Gaoping

An epic of the Jin dynasty, and the rise and fall of half its great clans. In 249 AD, during the Gaoping Tomb Incident, snow blanketed the city as fifteen-year-old Wang Rong watched the execution of Cao Shuang’s entire clan. His great-uncle Wang Xiang covered his eyes and whispered, “In these troubled times, you must stay alive before you can speak of a good name.” From that moment on, the fates of four generations of the Langya Wang clan became inextricably bound to the Jin dynasty’s 171-year reign. They lived through the music and hammers of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, the blades and bloodshed of the War of the Eight Princes, the rivers and tears of the southward migration, the victory reports and broken clogs of the Battle of Fei River, the abdication platform where Huan Xuan seized the throne, and the Taiji Hall where Liu Yu founded the Song dynasty. Grounded in the Book of Jin and brought to life through literature, this sweeping portrait recreates the power games, intellectual spirit, and human nature of the turbulent Wei and Jin era. Political schemes sharpened by words in the court, banners blotting out the sky on battlefields, celebrated scholars trading knowing glances as they debate, and families passing down the counsel that preserving the clan comes first: more than a hundred classic scenes are brought vividly to life, letting you witness the full weight of an age where elegance and bloodshed went hand in hand. The Sima clan founded a dynasty through usurpation, only to be usurped in turn. The great clans secured their power through marriage alliances, only to be scattered and lost. Men of humble birth rose through military merit, ultimately changing the dynasty. Everything vanished like the embers left on the Luo River, carried away by the wind. The wind begins at the tip of a duckweed leaf and dies among the weeds. Open this book, and you open a door to the age of Wei and Jin. Beyond it, someone plays the zither in peace, someone else manipulates the tides of power, and someone is fighting simply to keep their family alive.
