Lies Weave the Earth

My name is Verting, and I was born in a small village at the junction of the Three Kingdoms. When I was a child, I thought the world was just barren land, harsh winters, and a belly full of food. I once credulously believed in the bright myths preached by the Holy See, believing that gods hung high in the clouds, that suffering was just a test that mortals deserved, and that piety could buy salvation. But the fire that burned down the whole village tore apart my superficial understanding and burned away the remaining warmth I had. I am just a broken girl with only two roads in front of me: Die quietly. Or overthrow the entire false world - along with them - and their beliefs. After the thought settled, I realized that the fire was still burning in my chest. Burn away the flesh, burn away the fear, and in the end only one naked thought remains: I want to live. And I'm not willing to give in. I am not willing to accept that any "person" in this world can step people into the mud, and I am not willing to let other "people" decide my death for me. How I will live is something I will only think about after I survive. Now, let me finish taking this breath. I don't want to see what the world is like. I just want to know - why.
