Flywheel

In 1953, a strange vehicle appeared at an exhibition in Munich, Germany. It has no fuel tank, no overhead lines, and is driven by a steel flywheel weighing 1.5 Tons. The flywheel rotates at 3,000 revolutions per minute in the hydrogen tank and stores energy equivalent to 9 kilowatt hours of electricity. It takes a few minutes to charge and travel 8 kilometers. People marveled at its ingenuity. No one has ever asked: How long does it take for the flywheel to stop spinning when it is no longer needed? Flywheel trams had a brief rise in the 1950s before being replaced by cheaper diesel and battery-powered cars. Most flywheels are dismantled and recycled. But some are forgotten—buried at the end of abandoned tunnels beneath the city, sealed in charging stations where the blueprints were lost, behind doors that no one ever opens. They continued to spin in the darkness. No one told them to stop. More than half a century later, when urban geologists discovered a series of unexplained cracks in the walls of a new subway tunnel, no one imagined that the source was those old flywheels that were still spinning. This is not a story about resurrection. This is a story about inertia. Not the inertia of physics, but the inertia of time. Humanity started a process and then left, but that process in its own way found a way to continue to exist.
