Manifest Destiny, heading west. This is a thrilling chronicle of anomalies in North America. The story begins with a photo taken in Yellowstone Park by a geology graduate student at the University of Colorado. In this photo, the water column of Old Faithful Spring, the most famous scenic spot in Yellowstone National Park, tilts abnormally to the west, and the water mist forms a weird rainbow under the setting sun. It stretches westward from the spring, eventually disappearing at the end of the horizon. It seems like a road, like an invitation. This photo undoubtedly became the cover of Time magazine that year. The title is: "America, are you still looking east?" Over the next twelve years, the total population of twelve states in the Midwest fell by seventeen percent. These people were not witnessed dying, they were simply gone. People frantically sold their homes in state capitals and rural areas and headed west along the interstate with empty suitcases. Everyone thinks that their choice is bright - "I am heading towards the American dream" - this is already the "Westward Movement" of the new century, and everyone is heading towards Manifest Destiny. Just, No one ever came back from the west.
