A Memorial for My Nephew: No One Returns to Changshan

In the fifteenth year of Tianbao, Shi Siming's rebel forces capture Changshan. The prefect, Yan Gaoqing, is taken prisoner, and his nephew, Yan Jimin, deliberately surrenders to draw the enemy away and protect a map of the rebel defenses. Chen Sheng, a clerk in Changshan, is entrusted by Chief Secretary Feng Qian with carrying a secret letter to Pingyuan Commandery. On the way, he learns the truth about Yan Jimin hiding the map and, undeterred by the danger, turns back to Changshan to retrieve it. After eleven perilous days crossing frozen rivers and deep mountains, he finally delivers the letter and map to Yan Zhenqing, the prefect of Pingyuan. Chen Sheng then returns to Changshan with a small squad and risks his life to recover Yan Jimin's head, which has been hung on the city wall as a warning. In tears, Yan Zhenqing writes the Draft of a Memorial to My Nephew, mourning his brother, nephew, and the countless others who died for their country. Chen Sheng remains in Pingyuan, steadfast in his post as a clerk, carrying the sincerity and hopes of the dead. In a time of chaos, he protects the peace of the land, stays true to his promise never to break his word, and bears witness to the undying cause of family and country, amid blood and fire.
