Come to China Literature's website to read more of my works. In the autumn of 1941, mass graves outside Nanjing. I "woke up" in the cold mud, surrounded by the remains of my compatriots. The memory of the last moment still lingers in the deafening artillery fire on the Songhu battlefield. A group of Japanese in white coats dragged the still-living prisoners of war out of the pile of corpses like picking goods and put them into prison cars. Destination: a top-secret facility codenamed "Eagle's Nest". There are no prisoner of war camp numbers here, only code names. I am a "Kite". Seventy-two Chinese soldiers were stripped of their names, memories, and even humanity here, and received the most brutal training and brainwashing. The goal was to become the "Blade of the Empire" that pierced the heart of the motherland. A monthly "clearance" uses the death of a companion to prove loyalty. I survived, with deep-seated hatred and a crazy idea: I want to turn this devil's cave where traitors are cultivated into a tomb for burying them. 1944, Shanghai. I have become "Secretary Shen" who is relied upon by important officials of the Wang Puppet Government, and I am also a reliable "Sang Shen" in the eyes of the Japanese. Dealing with ghosts and monsters, I deliver information and eliminate traitors, stepping on the tip of the knife every step of the way. But I gradually discovered that both the "Yellow Birds" in Yan'an and the "Sabers" in Chongqing seemed to regard me as a target that must be eliminated. A larger web has already been woven, and perhaps from the moment I was "resurrected" in the mass grave, I was just a carefully designed chess piece destined to be sacrificed. Until I faced the final choice: to serve as a perfect tool to complete my mission, or to suffer a fatal defeat and tell the enemy that some souls will never surrender.
