This story is purely fictional, and the "memory editing technology" is a science fiction setting and has nothing to do with real medicine. Don't confuse "therapy" in the book with real-life mental health care. When Shen Su, a top memory restorer, was treating a girl with a memory disorder, he discovered that her memory was actually his own "cured" life. By the time the truth was revealed, her brain damage was irreversible. She spent her last moments asking him to do something extremely cruel and romantic - to overwrite his falsified past with the true memory of their love.
