Humanity has transformed two-thirds of the earth's surface into "cascading cities" - each city is an upward-growing steel forest. The lower floors are soaked in eternal neon and acid rain, and only the upper floors can touch the real sunlight. The world is divided and ruled by seven multinational super-conglomerates (called the "Seven Pillars"), and national governments have long been reduced to their administrative shells. In this world, the human nervous system can be "connected" - after implanting a neural interface chip, part of the consciousness can be uploaded to the digital space called the "Deep Web", and information flows between the body and the code like blood.
