Where My Heart Finds Peace

Told from the unique perspective of a cat named Zhuangzhuang, originally called Xiaodai, this is a heartwarming story about waiting, loss, and reunion. Before setting off on a trip to the glaciers, the cat’s family leaves it at home, promising they’ll be back soon. But they’re caught in a blizzard and die in an accident, never to return. Alone in the empty house, Zhuangzhuang goes from waiting patiently to falling into despair. Driven by hunger, it learns to open the refrigerator and catch fish from the aquarium, struggling to survive on its own.

When the owner’s elderly mother, a woman who has also lost all her loved ones, unlocks the door and enters the house, two lonely souls begin the difficult process of learning to live together. With trembling hands, the old woman strokes the cat that once witnessed the family’s laughter. Using her son’s old clothes and offering gentle companionship, she gradually puts Zhuangzhuang’s wariness at ease. Together, they take in stray kittens, and day by day, they build a new bond as they depend on one another.

As the years pass, Zhuangzhuang grows old, and the old woman grows weaker. When she finally passes away, the seventeen-year-old cat, sick and frail, follows its memories to the cemetery and quietly curls up before the owner’s mother’s gravestone, paws tucked beneath its body, and falls asleep forever. The next day, a kind neighbor finds it and buries it beside the old woman. The two lives once seen embracing in a photograph are finally reunited in another way.

Through a cat’s innocent perspective, the story reflects the depth of human emotions and conveys a love and loyalty that transcend species, even in the face of death and separation.
