The Faint Embers of the Apocalypse

The virus swept through the city like wildfire, and the world fell silent. Chen Shi, a former emergency physician with an infected left hand who only wants to go home, is forced to embark on a journey back through purgatory. With no special abilities or protagonist's halo, he relies on a doctor's composure and a systems architect's logic to model and survive amid the ruins overrun by the Eclipsed.

The road home is littered with corpses and treacherous human nature. He is forced to abandon the dying and, for the first time, pull the trigger to protect his family. Along the way, he encounters his resilient wife, Su Xiao, a nurse named Li Yao harboring a secret, and other survivors bearing their own traumas... The bonds of blood gradually expand into small but genuine connections.

But survival is about far more than avoiding monsters. Cunning, hunter-like mutants have appeared among the Eclipsed; other survivors are fighting over resources; and research notes purchased with a life point toward the virus's origin and a faint glimmer of hope. They discover that the virus is driving a dual evolution: the Eclipsed are undergoing a “dark ascent,” while survivors experience the costly “Ember Resonance.”

This is no epic about heroes. It is about ordinary people struggling, making choices, and rebuilding on the ashes of civilization. As the night stretches on and evolution hangs over them like a blade, they must answer this question: after losing everything, what is worth protecting? The last bite of food? The crumbling rules? The spark of knowledge? Or the faint light within them, the part that refuses to let their humanity die?

The story begins with one person's determination to get home, and will ultimately follow a group of people as they pass on the fragile yet undying warmth of civilization amid the embers.
